Isle of Wight trip – 12th-15th June 2020

31 July, 2019

Further to the recent posting we now have enough names to make pursuing this idea realistic.

We have found a very good company called The UK Holiday Group who are able to run this trip for us.  It has NOT been possible to obtain accommodation bookings for a group this size (up to 49 individuals) for only two nights midweek. The good news however is, we have made a group booking for THREE nights departing at 8.30 am on Friday 12th June 2020 by coach from WT to Warner’s Norton Grange Coastal Village, Yarmouth, IOW, bed, breakfast and three course evening meal, including ferry crossing from Lymington to Yarmouth, for £299 per person.

We have included 10 single rooms at NO SUPPLEMENT, (additional singles may carry a supplement).

This trip will also include 2 full days excursions on IOW, details of which to follow. There is an optional insurance payment of £12 per person which we recommend you take if you don’t already have an annual travel insurance policy.

If you would like to join us we will need to take your contact details and a £50 per person non-refundable deposit, we will have a table set up at the next monthly meeting to take the deposits.

The company organising this trip for us is ABTA/ATOL registered.

Visiting Churches – St James the Great, Bierton – 13th August

27 July, 2019

The next visit is to:

Tuesday –
13th August

St James the Great, Bierton

The earliest parts of the church are thought to date back to the 14th century and the main structure has changed little since then. In the 15th and 16th centuries the walls of the north and south aisles were raised  and extra windows added.  The present roof & stained glass windows are 19th century.  The church has 7 bells, the oldest dating back to 1678.

We will meet at the church at 2pm.  For more details or you would like to arrange transport, contact Odette Harris at churches@wtu3a.org.uk.

The rest of the schedule is listed below:

Isle of Wight trip – June 2020

26 July, 2019

It is proposed that as part of the 10 year celebration of Weston Turville U3A we run a midweek three day, two night trip to the IOW in June 2020.

It would include return travel from Weston Turville, dinner, bed and breakfast accommodation and transfers in IOW.

We are anticipating that this can be done for approx. £250 per person. The hope is to then include as many of our regular activities/groups as we can as optional extras. Or just go and relax!

If you think you may be interested in this trip please click below to contact the organiser (iow@wtu3a.org.uk).  If we have enough interest we can then proceed to obtaining prices for travel and accommodation and give an accurate price per person.

WTU3A General Meeting – 25th July 2019 – Update

25 July, 2019

Dear Members

Late afternoon on 24th July, Lindengate Mental Health Charity cancelled the speaker booked to give us a talk at our meeting on the 25th July.  Our contact informed us that the director of Lindengate advised that  volunteers should not attend at the Lindengate site due to the high temperatures forecast for tomorrow, and therefore the speaker is unable to attend our meeting.

The Committee have not been able to organise an alternative speaker at such short notice, so if you wish, please do use this meeting as a social event, as the group leaders tables, books, games and magazines will still be available.  However it is likely that the meeting will finish earlier than usual (i.e. 3-3.30pm).

Kind regards

WTU3A Committee

Historic Buildings – The Vyne – 25th September

23 July, 2019

The next visit is to The Vyne, near Basingstoke on Wednesday 25th September. The Vyne is a warm red-bricked Tudor mansion built in the 16th century for Lord Sandys, Henry VIII’s Lord Chamberlain, which later passed into the hands of the Chute family, who cared for the house and estate for over 300 years.

It was remodelled to its present configuration in the mid-17th century with the addition of a classical portico and summerhouse, firsts of their kind in England.

WTU3A Local History Group – May to November 2019

22 July, 2019

The programme for the rest of 2019 has now been completed.  Those who went on the visits to Marlow and Pitstone certainly had an excellent time and hopefully there is plenty to interest you in the coming months, although the visit to Hughenden Manor is now fully booked.

Please note there is a change to the speaker that was originally planned for September so check out the details below.

The visit to the Hughenden Manor & Gardens. They have offered us a private introductory talk with coffee/tea and a Cake Bite. The cost of this is £3.75 per head payable on the day. We will then be free to visit the Manor, Gardens and the Church where Disraeli is buried. For those who are National Trust members the price is free but for non-members it will be £11.10. Remember to take your NT cards. The plan is to meet at the visitor reception and then go for the talk.

FULLY BOOKED

As a substitute for the original speaker Colin Oakes has agreed to come along and give a talk entitled:Chesham – Boots, Brushes, Booze and Baptists

For those of you who have not heard Colin speak before he is an excellent and amusing speaker. This talk from a list of 153 that he has in his catalogue as it is local and subject seems to have an amusing twist.

Meeting is in the WT Chapel Room from 10:30 – 12:30am. Entrance will be £3.

Glynn will give the talk at this meeting and there are a couple of topics he could talk about:

A Historical Pictorial “Walk” around Weston Turville

The Contents of the Weston Turville Historical Society Website

Glynn will ask for you to say which of these you would like at the September meeting and we can go with the majority.

Meeting is in the WT Chapel Room from 10:30 – 12:30am. Entrance will be free.

Bob Keating will give this talk.  Many of us will have been to Waddesdon and it will be interesting to hear more about the Rothschilds and why Waddesdon Manor was built and much of the history behind it.

Meeting is in the WT Chapel Room from 10:30 – 12:30am. Entrance will be £3.
