WTu3a Newsletter – June 2022

Our next general meeting is on Thursday 23rd June when we have a presentation by Paul Barwick entitled “Nancy Wake; WW2 Spy”. Nancy became part of the escape route for Allied personnel evading capture from German forces in Southern France, driving an ambulance converted to hold hidden escapees.

July 2022 Raffle Prize
The next event in our 10 yr + 2 Anniversary celebrations is the Hog Roast at our July general meeting. This starts at 1pm with food served from 2pm. More details on the flyer here.
There will also be a raffle of a fabulous quilt that the Patchwork and Quilting Group have made be raffled – here is a sneak peek of the prize.
UPDATE: Garden Visit to Highgrove, Tuesday 5th July 2022. All day visit by coach, cost £42 per person. There are still has a couple of spaces available. Please contact Mary Duly at gardens@wtU3a.org.uk if interested.
Thanks to Sylv Elliott’s organisation, 14 members of the Walkers Group had a very enjoyable walking holiday last month at Abingworth, Sussex. It was a great success as there were three levels of walks each day, so there was something suitable for everyone.

The General Meeting on Thursday 26th May is our Annual General Meeting and the first of our 10 yr + 2 Anniversary events – the Bake Off.
Included in the newsletter are the dates of all the forthcoming events planned for our continuing 10 yr + 2 Anniversary celebrations.
A special mention must go to the Maureen Reeves and the very talented Patchwork and Quilting Group. 
Their recent project has been to make four small quilts with designs representing the four seasons.
The photos here show Spring (tulips), Summer (beach huts), Autumn (squirrels). The Winter quilt is not yet finished.
A raffle of another quilt made during lockdown is being planned for the July Hog Roast. Details in the newsletter.

This months talk at the General Meeting on Thursday 28th April is “An Actor’s Life” where Jeff Rozelaar will enlighten us with his amusing anecdotes from experiences on the stage and film sets.
Membership renewals
Your membership to WTu3a is now due for renewal and the details have been sent out, and the good news is that Committee decided to keep the membership fee at £10 until April 2023!

This months talk at the General Meeting on Thursday 24th March is “Tales of the Elizabethan Underworld” Our speaker is Graham Harrison. The talk is a light hearted examination of some of the cons, swindles and thievery practised on unwary visitors in 16th Century London.

This months talk at the General Meeting on Thursday 24th February is is “Robert Maxwell – pushed or slide?” Our speaker is Roger Mason. The presentation gives an account of his life and frauds, and tries to answer these questions.
BAKE OFF – The first of our 10 years+2 Anniversary events is the Great Weston u3a Turville Bake Off and this is taking place after our AGM at the General Meeting on 26th May. The application form and full details of how to take part are in the attached flyer. Applications must be submitted by 28th April.

This months talk at the General Meeting on Thursday 27th January is “You’ve never had it so good”. Our speaker is Paul Robbins. The talk is a nostalgic look back at society, culture, news and music from the 1950’s.
WTu3a 10 Year + 2 Anniversary events! A few dates for your diary are the 26th May – Bake Off (and AGM) and 28th July a Hog Roast. More events, dates and details will be published nearer the time.

This months talk at the General Meeting on Thursday 25th November is “Curiosities in the Cotswolds”. Our speaker is Alan Copeland. The talk will be a laid back tour of the Cotswolds.

Grub Club The last Grub Club of the year is at Chiltern Forest Golf Club on Monday, 29th November at 12 noon. You are able to have either lunch or afternoon tea. Contact Annie Edwards at grubclub@wtu3a.org.uk.

This months talk at the General Meeting on Thursday 28th October is From Guns and Roses to Hearts and Flowers and the speaker is Catherine Jones. She will speak about how she went from being an army officer, to being a writer of romantic fiction.
2022 Diaries have arrived and are now available to collect at the meeting.
Membership cards will also be available to collect for those that have not yet done so.
