News from the Groups – August 2023

Wednesday, 8th November, 2.30pm – Greatest Days – £32.50
The musical follows five boy band obsessed best friends in the 1990s, who reunite over 20 years later to see their heartthrobs one last time in what could be the Greatest Days of their life. Featuring more than 15 record-breaking Take That songs.
Thursday, 23rd November, 2.30pm – The Full Monty – £28.00
As in the 1997 smash hit film, this brand-new production is a rollercoaster ride of ups and downs, laughs and heartbreak. Celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the film.

Monday, 18th September
A deposit of £25 secures place. Only 8 places left. Cambridge for a tour of the mosque, free time in the city and a cream tea in Grantchester Gardens. Cost £45-£50 (max).

Winchester Christmas Market
Friday, 17th November
Coach only. Visit Winchester’s Christmas Market with five hours free time to visit the market, Cathedral or shops. Cost tbc. Names taken after the Cambridge trip.
Science & Technology
Thursday, 7th September – BMW Mini Plant in Oxford. Cost £15 per person. Tours are 1hr 40 mins. Free to visit the museum before or after the tour. Own transport. There are 12 places available. Full details on the flyer – please read in full as there is important information within.
Thursday, 5th October a visit and afternoon tour to The National Museum of Computing, near Bletchley Park, Milton Keynes. Cost will be £23 for entrance and tour. The 2 hour tour will start at 2pm. They have examples of the earliest computers from The Lorenz/ Colossus to the first digital types. Own transport. Full details on the flyer.
Tuesday, 31st October the rearranged visit to the London Transport Museum, Acton. The fee for the coach and the two tours (Depot and Poster tour) is £40 (subject to change if coach costs rise). Full details on the flyer.

Walking Group
Tuesday, 8th August

A new learning initiative asking members to write a letter to their younger self. It’s an opportunity for members to reflect on their lives and think of wisdom or reassurance that they may have appreciated hearing. The u3a would like to hear from as many members as possible. Aylesbury Vale u3a Trip – Monday 7th August

Avebury Circle and Great Chalfield Manor & Gardens – Monday, 7th August 8am to 6.30pm
AVu3a has places available on this trip and is inviting interested WTu3a members to join them.
Avebury sits amidst the world’s largest stone circle and you are free to wander among the stones. The 16th Century Manor has been refurbished in the style of different periods, each room reflecting the lives of past residents. There is an elegant tearoom, cafes and gift shops in the Old Farmyard. Lunch here before leaving for Great Chalfield.
Great Chalfield is a gem of a small fortified manor from the 1400’s, set in 7 acres of gardens. You may recognise it from Poldark, Persuasion or Wolf Hall.

Walking Netball – Free taster session for WTu3a Members
Walking Netball free ‘Taster’ session
Monday 26th June at Aston Clinton Park, London Road, Aston Clinton HP22 5HL from 11am to Midday.
For those of you that were not at the General Meeting last week, it was announced that we have the opportunity for WTu3a members to have a free ‘Taster’ session for Walking Netball with a qualified Netball coach, who has worked for England Netball for the past 10 years.
HOW TO BOOK (Pre-booking is essential) – please email Lucy Prestedge at superpowernetball@outlook.com, to book your place and state you are a WTu3a member.
If enough of our members are interested after the taster session, the Committee will explore the possibility of starting a specific group solely for WTu3a members, where the cost per session would be £5 and a regular 10-15 players would be required.
Walking Netball is a friendly and inclusive sport (open to members male and female). This will be gentle exercise aiding coordination and general well-being, but above all the focus will certainly be fun and enjoyment rather than anything serious or competitive.

2023 u3a Short Story Competition
The u3a national short story competition is back for its fourth year, and the judges are looking forward to seeing what creative writing talents members have to offer. The theme for this year’s competition is: ‘Decision(s)’.
Enter your short story via this form. The deadline to enter is Monday 26 June 2023. The competition rules can be found here.

Within the context of the current cost of living and climate crisis, this session aims to offer useful driving tips and practical advice for how you can save fuel, and reduce vehicle emissions and other negative consequences of driving on the environment. Into the mind of an artist. Van Gogh Part 1

Guns, knives, self-harm and excessive smoking and alcohol were aspects of Van Gogh’s life and through these, we may discover something of his state of mind at times throughout his life.
We trace some of Van Gogh’s life and works until he encountered a watershed in his artistic career.

Aylesbury Vale u3a – Mid-Summer Party with live music from The Blue Moons – 22nd June
Aylesbury Vale u3a are holding a Mid-Summer Party on Thursday 22nd June from 7.00 at Rivets Sports and Social Club.
Featuring live music from the 50s/60s Rock’n’Roll tribute band ‘THE BLUE MOONS’, with a licensed bar and raffle.
All u3a members are welcome and if any WTu3a members wish to join in you can purchase tickets by Cash, Cheque or Bank Transfer. Tickets are £10 in aid of a local charity supporting children with brain tumours and cancer.

**IMPORTANT UPDATE – PLEASE NOTE**
TRIP CANCELLED. The visit on 2nd May to the London Transport Museum, Acton has been cancelled due to lack of numbers, but will be rescheduled for early November.
Friday, 5th May, a visit to Chiltern Open Air Museum. Entry and tour cost £10. Full details on the attached flyer.
Thursday, 1st June, a visit to the Battle of Britain Bunker and Museum near Uxbridge. The cost is £10 for a private tour of the Bunker and to visit the museum. Own transport is planned and other arrangements can be made for those who cannot make the 70 odd stairs down to the Bunker Operations room. The trip is planned for 11-00 and the cost is £10. Refreshments are available in the entrance hall.
Thursday, 7th September (tbc) BMW Factory in Oxford. All details to be confirmed.
