Weston Turville U3A Newsletter – January 2014
Oh I am sooooooo excited as
I have proof that at least a few of you actually read the newsletter! As a result of my pleas last month we have had some good results: we have some prospective holidays to tell you about, we have had several people want to join the committee (so I now have to look up the rules about voting and elections). The trip to the Globe theatre next week is now oversubscribed and the only disappointment is no one is prepared to step forward and help organise the visiting churches group. This is sad because it was a popular group read more …

We know you’ve all hear about these tricks usually to try to diddle us out of money or get information about us or people in our Contacts lists.
It’s almost always the same thing – trying to get you to click on an attachment to an e-mail that will either lead you to revealing information to someone different from whom you supposed or, without further action on your part, do unpleasant things to your computer either overtly or covertly causing at least hassle, but more read more …

Trading Times
This comes with a disclaimer from both the U3A and the AVDC but I have no reason to suspect that it is not entirely genuine – it does sound very interesting for those who, perhaps, have only recently stopped work or have some special skills or interests.
It concerns an organisation called Trading Times that matches the skills & availability of people over 50 with the part-time ad hoc resource requirements of local businesses. It is very new, only opening their doors nationwide on 6th Jan. read more …

Wish You Were Here … in Weston Turville?!

Amid many interesting things on the WT History Society’s web page is an interesting selection of old postcards of … Weston Turville!
They are to be found at www.wthsoc.org.uk/gallery/postcards and there are about 170 of them.
The society are very interested in any other early card of the area you may have for the collection, loan or copying. Who would have guessed at least 11 postcard photographers decided on using our crossroads as a subject.
RansomWare – Modern Highway Robbery
The good folk at Which? magazine have published this useful page on spotting and dealing with ransomware.
It is all described on this page. Also note the additional links at the bottom of that page for further security ideas and recommendations.
[Web-Ed – I have found the recommended MalwareBytes most effective for occasional use when problems occur – in addition to the continuous use of a solid (free or paid-for) virus and trojan detector/killer]
Weston Turville U3A Newsletter – January 2014
I was going to wish you all a Happy New Year but it seems so long ago that I have forgotten all about it! January is also running out so I thought I would tell you about February instead… Did you know that Candlemas is celebrated on 2nd February? This is because it is based on an ancient festival which celebrates the midpoint of winter: it being halfway between the shortest day and the spring equinox. There is evidently some weather lore which surrounds this day which states that if the weather is good we have bad weather ahead for February and March and if it is bad read more …
