Reasons to book:
- Borough Farmers Market
- Bankside
- The View at the Shard
It is described as very entertaining and gentle walking tour on London’s Bankside using the crystal clear VOX headsets so we can all hear the guide and ending with a visit to ‘The View at The Shard’. We are leaving later to miss the traffic, so will be leaving about 10.30 and arriving back about 7.30 to 8pm.
We start at Borough Farmers Market to explore and a bite to eat before going to Southwark’s Bankside. This was the Soho of Elizabethan London. A delicate rose window survives from the Palace where the Bishops lived cheek by jowl with the brothels and bear pits. In a raucous neighbourhood, the sheer scale of the depravity would make a modern sybarite blush but there were rules and the really bad could end up in the infamous Clink. The headsets can be used with hearing aids but the trip is not suitable for people using two walking sticks or a walking frame due to the cobbles. It is not a fast walk or very far but if in doubt please contact trips@wtu3a.org.uk.
This trip is on a slightly later date so that hopefully the weather will be better and the view seeable! However if we cannot see at least three of the following five landmarks during the time of your visit, you’ll receive a complimentary return ticket, allowing you to return to The View From The Shard within three months, absolutely free: • London Eye, • 20 Fenchurch Street, • Tower Bridge • One Canada Square • St Paul’s Cathedral
The cost will be in the region of £55 but it includes the £35 cost of going up The Shard. This is the last trip Mandi Simons is organising with Pat and Annie before she hands over to Jayne Lennard and her team who have volunteered to do the next ones. The trips team will be taking names and cheques at this months meeting. If you have any queries, please contact Mandi Simons at trips@wtu3a.org.uk.
