Science & Technology Group … is flying, but do we know how?

9 February, 2016

SandT logo2Aviation may be a topic for the future but John Beer’s new group has had its inaugural meeting – primarily looking at CAD (Computer Aided Design)  – and established the initial tranche of potential visits: Bletchley Park (Enigma and Colossus), London Museum of Water and Steam, Harwell “Diamond” Synchrotron, Amazon Warehouse Hemel/MK, Glaxo Smith Klyne, NATS Centre Fareham (National Air Traffic System), Arla Dairy and BMW Oxford – a wide range of applied and theoretical science and technology – and talks/discussions as wide ranging as ‘how long is a piece of string’, automation of clinical diagnosis and ‘why does the GPS navigation system need to take account of the Theory of Relativity’.

However, just for the plain fun of it, John has arranged for next meeting (3rd March) that the local operators of Cartridge World who also operate 3D Print World will demonstrate domestic level 3D printers and the process of creating the data to ‘print’ any object at (almost) any scale after which we will consider our future topic and activities.

The following meeting  (7th April) Glynn White will give a talk entitled ‘A life in Clinical Diagnostics’ taking us through the techniques and methods used by the machines that do this work.

Future plans will be distributed to group members so, if you’d like to know what is planned and to get the opportunity of joining planned visits register your interest with John Beer  (science.technology@wtu3a.org.uk) .
