UKToursOnline.com have written to us to advise that they are offering a free virtual tour that members may be interested in during the current lockdown. Normally their talks are £6 and last 30 minutes (plus time for questions), all delivered via Zoom. You can see the full list here. They are introducing their online talks with this special free event – a virtual stroll around London’s Parliament Square on Monday 9th November 2020 12:30 – 13:30.
The tour will look at (and inside) Parliament itself, sharing some stories and some oddities from history and the British constitution (why can’t the Queen enter the House of Commons? And did you know a junior minister is held hostage at Buckingham Palace while HMQ is in Parliament?).
There’ll also be a visit to Westminster Abbey, the ‘national church’, where coronations, royal weddings and royal funerals have taken place since at least 1066.
And we’ll examine the life and times of some of the people commemorated by statues in the square – including Churchill, Nelson Mandela, Gandhi and Millicent Garrett Fawcett.
