Weston Turville U3A Newsletter – August 2012

18 August, 2013

I thought that since the school holidays are upon us and a lot of members were doing extra duties in the child minding department, I would find a suitable photo which encompasses doting grandparents let loose on unsuspecting offspring….how did I do?

On a more serious note, I was sent this warning by email the other day which, I personally, am taking very seriously: A Warning about Shampoo. Don’t wash your hair in the shower. It involves the shampoo when it runs down your body when you shower with it. I don’t know how I didn’t work this out sooner. I use shampoo in the shower. When I wash my hair, the shampoo runs down my whole body, and printed very clearly on the shampoo bottle label is this warning, “FOR EXTRA BODY AND VOLUME.” No wonder I have been gaining weight. I have now got rid of that shampoo and I am going to start showering with dishwashing liquid instead as its label states, “DISSOLVES FAT THAT IS OTHERWISE DIFFICULT TO REMOVE.” Problem solved!

THE SPEAKER on Thursday 22nd August is Stephen Hearn from Tring Auction House. He has kindly volunteered to do some valuations at the meeting so if you believe you have an original Picasso or Matisse or even a Russian enamelled egg or if you are just curious about things you have inherited, picked up in a charity shop or had for ever in the cupboard, then bring ONE ITEM per person to the meeting and you may be buying the drinks later!

VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED: Help is needed to staff our U3A stall at the village fete during the afternoon of Saturday 7th September. You will be there anyway enjoying the crafts, dog show, petting farm animals, tea and cakes etc so why not spend a little time on our stall? Please contact Janet Hawkins for details.

BOOKS AND BRIDGE: Sorry to nag, but……I have put out several requests for someone who would be willing to lead either a new book club or a new bridge group. It is not an onerous commitment, and support would be available. So do you have a room and an interest in the subject? Than please make contact with either myself or Dave Johnson. We have a waiting list so you do not need to recruit members!!!

FREE HOLIDAY FOR OLDER PERSONS ON LOW INCOME: NBFA Assisting the Elderly is a charity dedicated to helping the elderly stay socially and physically active through means of pain relief machines, emergency home alarms, free holidays, and subsidised Day Trips.

Their goal is to ensure that the elderly who have become isolated, alone or unhappy are enabled to reintegrate, and conduct a more enjoyable lifestyle. On 28th October they have a Break-Away holiday to Skegness, with pick-up points in Milton Keyes, Bletchley, and Buckingham. These are free five day holidays for people 65 and over, who are on a low income and haven’t been on holiday in three years or more. Half board accommodation, transport and entertainment are provided free of charge; all that they ask is that applicants be able to climb aboard the coach unhindered.
