WTU3A February 2020 Newsletter

Welcome to the February newsletter.  Read it in full here. The speaker this month is the critically acclaimed author and speaker, Fran Sandham, and the title of the talk is “Dr Livingstone, I presume”.

Also, to all our budding Pru Leith’s and Paul Hollywood’s, get your wooden spoons at the ready! Information and entry forms for the Bake Off Competition to be held at our Ten Year Anniversary launch at the monthly meeting on 28th May are available via the link here.  Get your entry in by 23rd April. Get ready and….BAKE! 

 

Aylesbury Vale U3A Trips – available places

20 February, 2020   

Aylesbury Vale U3A Trips organiser, Dan McGregor, has advised us that they have some vacancies on a couple of their forthcoming trips and would welcome any WTU3A members who wish to join them.

  • Wednesday, 1st April is for “A day in Canterbury”, costing £31 per person (which includes entry to the Cathedral). (8 seats available at present). 
  • Monday, 4th May (Bank Holiday is Friday of that week) is for a trip to Petworth House (National Trust) and the City of Guildford, costing £16 pp. (12 seats available to date).

Should anyone wish to join them on one or both, please contact Dan McGregor on outings@avu3a.org.uk to e-mail him with your phone number, after which he will give you all the necessary details.  For those not on email, please phone Dan on 01296 582054.

 

Coronavirus-Updated

Update from the Third Age Trust on 3 March 2020

Following the confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK, the Government and NHS have issued advice for members of the public.  The Third Age Trust wants to share this advice with you.

Typical symptoms of coronavirus include fever and a cough that may progress to a severe pneumonia causing shortness of breath and breathing difficulties.

The UK Chief Medical Officers are advising anyone who has travelled to the UK from mainland China, Thailand, Japan, Republic of Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia or Macau in the last 14 days and is experiencing cough or fever or shortness of breath, to stay indoors and call NHS 111, even if symptoms are mild.

Aylesbury Vale U3A’s Summer Rock’n’Roll Party!

Aylesbury Vale U3A’s Mid-Summer Rock ‘n’ Roll Party is open to WTU3A members to attend.  It’s being held at the Aylesbury Rugby Club on 20th June 2020 from 7.00 – 11.00 pm.  Featuring the Live 50s and 60s Rock’n’Roll Band ‘THE BLUE MOONS‘.

U3A Thames Valley Network Study Day – Understanding Architecture – 25th September

There has been such a response to the first planned study day ‘Understanding Architecture’ on 23rd April, which is now fully booked, that the organiser has very kindly arranged to repeat the day.
 
The new date is Friday 25th September.  Details are on the attached flyer and application form, and if you would like to book for the new date, please use the application, and send it off to Mrs Margaret Sherrington as per the instructions on the form.
 

Garden Visits

16 February, 2020   

 

 

Bookings are now being taken for Thursday 12th March. Lindengate Garden, by Dobbies Garden Center Wendover.  A guided tour of this garden which is run by Lindengate Mental Health Charity commencing at 4.30p.m (tour has to take place after gardeners have left).  One hour tour followed by tea and cake. Cost £10 per person.  Meet at Lindengate for 4.30pm.  Contact Mary at gardens@wtu3a.org.uk

Below is the full programme of garden visits planned at present.

Snowdrops at Waterperry 

60 different snowdrop varieties carpeting the ornamental gardens over the season starting from the end of January and the main show throughout February, enjoy a walk around the gardens to see these little heralds of spring in a magical setting

Entry fee to garden £7.50 pay on day, unless you are an RHS member then entry is free.  Afternoon tea can be had at their Cafe.

Thenford Arboretum (Lord Heseltine’s garden). Cost  £23.00 per person including coach.  Full monies will be required at March meeting. There are still a couple of places remaining, plus Mary will run a waiting list.”

 

A joint visit with the Historic Buildings group.

Ham House is a rare 17th Century house on the banks of the River Thames.  This will be via coach and includes a house tour and garden tour.  Cost £25, plus the entry fee if you are not a NT member.

Food Appreciation – 25th February at The Harrow, Bishopstone

16 February, 2020   

This month we are going to try THE HARROW at Bishopstone, on Tuesday 25th February. They do a set lunch menu that is a very reasonable price. 
 
The total number of places for this lunch is 30 – UPDATE – this is fully booked at the present time.

Isle of Wight Trip 12-15 June

16 February, 2020   

 

For all members that are booked on the trip to the IOW in June it is now time to pay your balances.

The trip organiser, Arlene Bocking, will have a table at the back of the room at the February general meeting (27th Feb).  Payment will be by cheque made payable to Weston Turville U3A(travel).  For any members who are taking the insurance for the trip, please bring your completed forms when you pay.

There are going to be three optional visits whilst we are in the IOW, they will all be made by our coach which is with us for the entire trip;

Ventor Botanic garden, Saturday pm, entrance price £8.50, pay on the day

Rosemary Vineyard,  Sunday late morning, to include guided tour and tasting for £2 per person, pay on the day, then a lunch at your own cost

Osborne House, Monday, entrance price  £13.50 , pay on the day unless you are an English Heritage member

Historic Buildings Visits

Update 17.03.20 – Following the Prime Ministers briefing yesterday, we have taken the step of cancelling the trip to Upton House. In the current climate it seemed the correct thing to do to protect ourselves and others.

Upton House was purchased in 1927 by the 2nd Viscount Bearsted and has been remodelled.  The renovations created a made to measure home to showcase a world class art and porcelain collection, including works by Bosch, Stubbs and Canaletto. 
 
Lady Bearsted’s passion for plants is revealed with spring bulbs, herbaceous planting and kitchen garden – all reflected in the mirror pool.  Please note that it is a terraced garden with steps.

Ham House is a rare 17th Century house on the banks of the River Thames at Richmond. The Duke and Duchess of Lauderdale together transformed Ham House into one of the grandest Stuart houses in England and is internationally recognised for its superb collection of paintings, furniture and textiles, largely acquired 400 years ago.

Basildon Park is an 18th Century house purchased in the 1950s by Lord and Lady Lliffe and lovingly restored.  We will explore the house on a freeflow basis rather than a guided tour.

U3A Thames Valley Network, Cyber-Crime Study Day – 8th April

Please find attached the flyer and application form for the TVN Cyber-Crime Study Day (subtitled “Protect Your World”), which will take place at the King’s Church, Amersham, on Wednesday 8th April, 2020.
 
This venue is a new one to the network and can hold more people than our other venues but if you wish to attend please compete and return the application form as soon as possible to secure your place.
