WT U3A Local History Group Meetings – September 2017 to February 2018

Now that summer is officially over we are back to talks at the WT Chapel Rooms on the 4th Tuesday of each month. I hope that you have all had a good summer with holidays and no doubt grandchildren duties. With regards to the forward programme I have talks arranged through February 2018 (what? another year will have gone by!) and I hope that there is sufficient variety of topics that you will find interesting.

Roy Smart is coming along to give us a talk on Amy Johnson.

Aviatrix ,  Amy ‘Johnnie’ Johnson,  ‘ The Aeroplane Girl’ ’  who, from  modest beginnings as a fishmonger’s daughter from Hull,  by singular grit and determination, taught herself the basics of aviation and  then with little experience  and against all the odds – after an extraordinary pioneering feat of solo flying half way round the world in a fragile little biplane  – emerged to a crescendo of fame, celebrity and heroine worship.

Meeting is in the WT Chapel Room from 10:30 – 12:30pm. Entrance of £3.

Tuesday 24th October 2017

Frank Preece has agreed to come along and give us a talk on Claydon House and the Verney family. Come along if you want to learn more about the Verney family who have occupied Claydon for more than 550 years, their fluctuating fortunes, their involvement in the English Civil War and their connection with Florence Nightingale.

Meeting is in the WT Chapel Room from 10:30 – 12:30pm. Entrance of £3.

Tuesday 28th November 2017

Mike Payne of Princes Risborough has agreed to come along and give us a talk entitled “Shops and Shopkeepers of Princes Risborough”. The talk covers the last 100 years of Princes Risborough and the history of the shops and the various families etc who have run these premises. I know that some of you have either lived in or worked in Princes Risborough so should be an interesting talk.

Meeting is in the WT Chapel Room from 10:30 – 12:30pm. Entrance of £3.

Tuesday 23rd January 2018

Mike Palmer of the Aylesbury Museum has agreed to come along to give a talk entitled The famous Aylesbury Duck and the not so famous Aylesbury Prune”. With the large number of duck breeders in Weston Turville in the 1800’s the talk will have significant relevance to our village.

Meeting is in the WT Chapel Room from 10:30 – 12:30pm. Entrance of £3.

Tuesday 27th February 2018

As part of my role on the Hampden Fields Action Group I have been looking at the archaeological reports on the various proposed housing development sites. Although unfortunately there is nothing in them that would prevent any developments there are some interesting findings. These give some clues as to the history of the immediate area. The sites include the Redrow Site, Hampden Fields and Woodlands. I am pulling together a series of slides that summarise the most interesting finds and will present these at the meeting.

The talk will be entitled “Archaeological Findings from the Proposed Developments around Weston Turville”

Meeting is in the WT Chapel Room from 10:30 – 12:30pm. Entrance will be free of charge.
